In general, it is very easy to replace an optical drive like a CD-RW/DVD combo or DVD-RW, but it may be very expensive if you do not search the right way. There are only a few drive manufacturers. They supply drives for all of the laptop manufacturers. Even when the laptop manufacturer produces its own drives, they may not use them in their laptops. Optical drives, these days, are more generic and standardized. Older laptops used to be firmware and jumper specific. Also, the faceplate mounting can vary. Because it is cheaper to get a drive made by Hitachi or Teac, for example, than to get an Acer or Sony drive, I always recommend you get the part number of the old optical drive from Windows device manager or from the drive label.
This ensures you get the exact same drive and you will be able to replace it with the old faceplate and brackets without any issue. If you need a drive, I recommend you contact my friends at LNT Parts for assistance in finding a replacement.
